A thousand details are involved in the opening of a restaurant, many of which are not anticipated in the initial planning stages. These items range from the location of the refrigeration units to the correct amount of make-up air to ensure proper hood operation, to the placement of thermometers to pass health inspections.

It is easy for foodservice operators to get caught up in a myriad of design and engineering issues and lose track of the most critical aspects of the process: the establishment of the budget and schedule for completion needed to meet the opening date. This is where The Matthews Group comes in, providing targeted construction management services: 

·         Work with the design team and owner from the initial concept.

·        Work with suppliers and sub-contractors with value design and   estimating.
·         Study the building infrastructure and identify potential issues.

·         Coordinate MEP requirements with building systems.

·         Work with kitchen equipment suppliers and back-of-house personnel on custom equipment and long lead items.

·         Work closely with local building and health departments to ensure a smooth permitting, inspection, and turnover process.


Excellence in construction management is only gained through hands-on experience. As in most major projects involving multiple components, vendors, and subcontractors, many unpredictable situations occur. In the midst of handling these unexpected items, it's easy to lose track of the budget and the schedule for completion. The Matthews Group, with 25 years of experience in managing projects that are time and budget sensitive, is expert in keeping complex projects on target, working with the broad range of vendors and regulatory requirements needed to ensure successful completion.   


Our goal is to ensure a smooth, methodical process by coordinating site selection, design concept drawings, budgeting, final design drawings, permit drawings, and CDs. The Matthews Group will:


·         Continually work with suppliers and sub-contractors to ensure timely delivery of materials and equipment.

·         Work closely with field personnel during construction to confirm accuracy and quality of the finishes and installation of the MEP systems.

·         Work closely with the owners to coordinate delivery and installation of owner-supplied materials and equipment.

·         Constantly monitor progress, scheduling, and workforces to confirm that milestones are met.

·         Work with the design team and owners during the close-out process for a smooth transition and turnover.
